I noticed a women, through a well-lit window, gracefully moving around within a yoga studio. As I stopped to watch her, she squatted down gently, putting her palms on the floor and straightening her legs. She pressed her knees against her shoulder bone close to her armpits. I couldn’t believe the way her pose was being formed so elegantly. She slowly and effortlessly moved her weight forward to her arms and lifted her feet from the floor. Then, ever so carefully, balanced back on her hands. One of the instructors walked by outside and spoke softly over my shoulder, “that is a crane pose.” In my mind, I was thinking, “So, this is yoga? Can I do this?” I had always thought that yoga was for thin, bendy, liberal, hippie vegetarians and affluent housewives. Soon, I would learn this was a misconception. Yoga is for everyone. I opened the door and walked in.
The art and form of yoga can be traced back through history to ancient India more than 5,000 years ago. Yoga is a Sanskrit word meaning to join, or yoke; a union. Conceptually, yoga is the practice of fully uniting the body, mind and spirit. It takes all three to make all these various positions happen, at least for me. It is a wonderful exercise that has been long studied and found to help many different types of people and ailments. For some people, it is actually recommended by their physicians for the health and healing that it can bring, especially to those that are in pain or have intense anxiety.
Founded by Trevor Tice, in 2002, Corepower Yoga is a full-range yoga education and training company with 55 studio locations across the US. The Country Club Plaza has been graced with one of these studios. As a Company, they have become known for their high standards in yoga instruction. Their personal mission, as a Company, is to show the world the incredible life-changing things that happen when you root an intensely physical workout in the mindfulness of yoga.
Tyra, the studio assistant for the Plaza location, is an energetic force that welcomes you as you walk through the door. We sat down and had a great time talking with her. She shared about her experience as a high school and College athlete and an injury that shortened her career. Unable to do regular exercise routines, it was recommended that she give yoga a try to help her through her healing process. She fell in love at first pose and became an avid yogi. She soon discovered that it was helping her to overcome her injury. If you get the chance to stop by Corepower Yoga on the plaza, go by and meet her and the crew. They are what lights up the Corepower yoga studio here in KC and they will help you to reach your full potential in the realm of yoga.
